BRAINTREE CHAPLAINCY FOR INDUSTRY AND COMMERCE
The Chaplaincy Service
A personal service of ethical and spiritual support for people in their places of employment.
The chaplaincy is established under the auspices of Essex Churches Council for Industry &
Commerce. It works on behalf of Braintree & District Churches Together and is supported
by Braintree Chamber of Trade and Commerce.
The town of Braintree provides the places of employment for thousands of people, in a wide
variety of occupations. Many of these people experience problems, conflicts and stress in their
places of work or at home, or both.
The Braintree Chaplaincy for Industry and Commerce (BCIC) seeks to offer to all people
who work in and near the town of Braintree, the services of a chaplain. Chaplains, by
visiting places of work, get to know people in their working environment, and are there for
them to talk to, as appropriate. Chaplains are available to all people at all levels within an
organisation and will not be seeking to change their religious beliefs or affiliations; but
chaplains will be motivated by the Christian faith, and some of those who seek the services
of a chaplain may wish to speak about spiritual matters, if necessary by arrangement outside
working hours.
Chaplains are expected to be aware of workplace issues but must be neutral in disputes; they
must also respect health and safety guidelines in workplaces.
Opportunities
Currently, a team of 7 chaplains visit workplaces in 6 different parts of the town.
Chaplains appointed in the area, commissioned by Essex Churches Council for Industry and
Commerce, are multi-denominational –
Anglican, Roman Catholic, URC, Pentecostal, Evangelical.
There is significant opportunity for churches in Braintree to expand chaplaincy outreach
in the town and district so recruitment and training of additional voluntary chaplains, clergy
and lay, is essential.
